RHL referees engaged in a pre-season training camp

27.07.2026
The annual pre-season training camp for Russian Hockey League (RHL) referees was staged in Moscow Region.

Alongside theory lessons which included in-depth studies of adjustments to the rules and regulations, the officials engaged in intense physical training sessions under the guidance of professional coaches.

Furthermore, work was also undertaken with regard to in-game situations with the focus being on how referees need to position themselves, their decision-making when battles are taking place along the boards and how to correctly conduct video reviews.

RHL referee Nikita Shmidt:

"All of us had prepared for this camp. The yo-yo test? It involves interval running with sprints. You initially start off slowly, before subsequently gaining speed rapidly. It's quite hard to withstand the physical demands, but you have to perform it in the correct manner because the coaches watch you carefully.

"It's an important test, though, as during games you constantly have to change the pace of your skating. In order to be fully prepared for the campaign, you need to work really hard now."

The National Junior Hockey League (NMHL) was renamed the RHL in April of this year. The reforms were made with the goal of improving the system of coaching young players and creating optimal development conditions for those aged between 16 and 19. The league does indeed form the U20 Russian Championship.
