The RIHF is initiating updates to the injury response protocols at junior level

18.11.2025
Medical support is one of the priorities of the safety system for physical education and sport. As a consequence of this, the Russian Ice Hockey Federation pays special attention to all health-threatening incidents for ice hockey players, especially at junior level.

On 15 November 2025, during the AKM versus Red Machine Junior game as a part of the championship for teams consisting of players born in 2014, Artem Sultangareev, one of the leading players for Red Machine Junior, smacked his head against the boards after a collision with an opposing defenseman. The situation initially appeared to be extremely dangerous for the young player, but, thankfully, the worst-case scenario was averted: the player managed to brace himself at the last moment, consequently avoiding a serious injury.

Cervical spine and head injuries are especially dangerous because, even if there are no external signs of damage, it is crucial to promptly perform an MRI to rule out internal bleeding and other dangerous consequences. Delays in diagnosis and transportation can cost a child's health. Despite the obvious danger of the injury, no ambulance was called out to the ice.

The current injury response system requires improvement. More careful oversight is needed for the availability and readiness of ambulance crews at sporting events. More detailed protocols are needed for cases where ambulances on duty at matches are required to provide emergency transport to the hospital for an injured player. Referees' responsibility for promptly responding to such dangerous situations must be increased, and a refereeing procedure for serious injuries to players, particularly to the neck and head area, must be developed and strictly enforced. The Russian Ice Hockey Federation will submit a proposal to government authorities to amend the relevant documents.
