Red Machine event in Zapolyarny
Between the 20th and 22nd of February, a training camp organised by the Russian Ice Hockey Federation (RIHF) and Nornickel was held for junior players in Zapolyarny.
The event formed a part of the long-standing agreement between the parties which is aimed at developing ice hockey in the regions where Nornickel operate.
Under the guidance of experienced RIHF coaches, 60 athletes aged between 7 and 17 trained across three age groups in accordance with the Red Machine National Development Program. Among the coaches was legendary former ice hockey player Anna Prugova, a two-time bronze medalist of the World Championship and six-time winner of the Russian Championship.

The players trained indoors with regard to their general physical fitness, coordination, balance and muscle strengthening, and on the ice concerning puck handling, game situations and shooting techniques. They also participated in theoretical sessions covering the fundamentals of ice hockey history and aspects of mental preparation for matches.

For coaches from local schools in Zapolyarny, Nikel and Sputnik, the camp became a source of new knowledge and allowed them to expand their methodological repertoire.
During the breaks between training sessions, participants were offered a varied entertainment program. Furthermore, after the camp had ended, a festival featuring games, competitions and a discussion with ice hockey blogger Vobon took place. Everyone received commemorative prizes and participation certificates.

RIHF President Vladislav Tretiak:
"The joint program between the RIHF and Nornickel serves as a perfect example of how a consistent partnership between a sporting federation and a major business creates a sustainable system for player development across remote regions of the country. This effective partnership has been made possible by Vladimir Potanin, the President of Nornickel. I would like to sincerely thank him for his willingness to work together! He truly cares for the development of our national sport.
"Our efforts are growing in scope on a yearly basis, with the results speaking for themselves. A number of players who attended these camps in previous years have taken a huge step forward in their development, competing at professional level for junior teams. Their journey demonstrates that talent, supported by professional methods and regular work with specialists, can blossom even when players are from the most remote of regions.
"Their success is a fantastic motivation tool for the latest set of players participating in the training camp. The children here can see that peers from their own cities, their own rinks are achieving professional success. For its part, the RIHF is providing both players and coaches with the tools required for development and progression. The methods of the Red Machine National Development Program are effective in ensuing that players realise their potential!"
