Four forwards have joined the under 18 Russian national team
The under 18 Russian national team are continuing to prepare for the World Challenge Cup in Bonnyville, Canada. The tournament will begin on December 11th.
Forwards Andrei Svechnikov (Muskegon Lumberjacks), Yaroslav Alexeev (Sherbrooke Phoenix), Ivan Chekhovich (Baie Comeau) and Denis Mikhnin (Rimouski Oceanic) have now joined up with the team.
One friendly will take place on the 9th of December against Canada East.
Andrei Svechnikov, Russia U18 forward:
- The trip here was fine. I've been on the go since five in the morning though, I'm a bit tired. Nevertheless, when arriving at training and seeing the guys again, I'm happy to see everyone.
- How are you adapting to North America?
- The first month was tough, I had to learn the language. There are no other Russian guys in my team. However, things are getting better now, the team have accepted me well. Ice hockey is popular in the city, there are advertisements everywhere. Do I get recognised on the street? No, not yet. I don't have a lot of time to go out. I live with a local family, they are nice people. The coach in my club wished me luck for this tournament.
- One of the reasons for signing with the Lumberjacks was to have the opportunity to see your brother Evgeny.
- Yes, we see each other every week now. I was at his game yesterday.
- You are regularly getting points for your club.
- Hopefully, that form will carry on into the national team. Nevertheless, the main thing is to play a team game. How will the coach use me? I will find out tomorrow at the morning skate. I will play where the coaches tell me to.
- Having travelled here, will you be fine for tomorrow's friendly game?
- I didn't train today and I need to get used to playing with my linemates. The main thing is to be in shape for the competition.
