Reaction after the U18 Challenge Cup semi-final
Russia U18 head coach Sergei Golubovich:
- Our special teams let us down. Three of the six penalties were dished out for high sticking against the opponents. Unlike the Americans, our players compete in protective masks. If we would have played without them, I am sure that the USA would have taken more penalties. The opponents play fast ice hockey, being older than us they are physically stronger. This game was lost at the end of the first period. Nevertheless, I don't want to blame my guys, they fought until the final buzzer. Is this a good experience for them? Yes, certainly.
Russia U18 forward Yaroslav Alexeev:
- We failed to take advantage of our goalscoring chances. We should have shot more too.
- Was this similar to a match in the league that you play in?
- A little bit, yes. However, we needed to win this game. Now, we have to forget what happened and prepare for tomorrow. We'll fight for a medal. The experience at the Ivan Hlinka memorial tournament will help us.
- Is it great to be with the national team again?
- Yes, it's a different atmosphere. I know all of the guys, they accepted me well. I didn't require any time to get used to being here again.
- How is life going in North America?
- When I arrived, it was tough. I didn't speak any English. The majority of our players speak French, but there is also one Czech player and some have come from America. English is the main language in the group.
Russia U18 forward Andrei Svechnikov:
- It's always disappointing to lose. We didn't stick to the game plan, the penalties prevented us from getting a grip on the game. The opponents are older than us, we were lacking a bit of strength. Luck plays its part too.
- You are playing brilliantly at this competition.
- Even when you take points, you're sad after a loss. For my goals, my teammates set me up well.
- One more game is coming up.
- It's hurtful to lose in a semi-final. However, a medal is a medal, we will play to win tomorrow.
