Following the 3:1 triumph over Denmark in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Olympic Games, ROC men's ice hockey team head coach Alexei Zhamnov, defenseman Yegor Yakovlev and forward Arseniy Gritsyuk shared their emotions.
Head coach Alexei Zhamnov:
- The guys coped with their task today, we now need to take two more steps in order to achieve our goal. We initially controlled the game, but then the Danes equalised on the powerplay. It's the knockout stage, you can never tell how the match is going to unfold. We made an important step forward. Our performance level? I thought that it improved today, but we want the guys to be calmer when unleashing their shots on goal. Vadim Shipachyov finally scored? All of us were relieved for him when the puck went in. I think that it will be easier for him now.
Defenseman Yegor Yakovlev:
- It was a good first period from us, we created a lot of scoring opportunities. The conceded goal in the second stanza turned the game a bit, and they also had chances during the third period. It's important that we earned the victory, we don't have any room for error and I think that such games like this one will help us moving forward.
Forward Arseniy Gritsyuk:
- We expected for Denmark to sit back and wait for counter-attacks in the first period. Nevertheless, we wasted a lot of opportunities, and their goalkeeper was excellent. In the third period, we weren't prepared for such an attack-minded approach from the opponents. I liked how we played in their zone, though, we made nice plays and scored good goals.
