Reaction after beating Sweden at the 2021 Channel One Cup

16.12.2021
Following the dramatic 1:0 triumph over Sweden in the second match of the 2021 Channel One Cup in Moscow, senior Russian national team head coach Alexei Zhamnov and goalkeeper Ivan Fedotov shared their emotions.

Senior Russian national team head coach Alexei Zhamnov:

- It was a tough match. Yesterday's game was also difficult, so we rotated the squad a bit. In games like this, you must be able to play well despite not being in possession of the puck. I think that our guys coped with their task. After the second period, it became clear that the first goal was going to decide the game. Sweden play in a different manner in comparison to Canada, they are excellent at controlling the puck. We tried to be compact. In comparison to the first match, we were better in defence today.

- We saw Nikita Gusev in a line with Vadim Shipachyov at times today.

- Yes, midway through the second period we decided to put them in a line together. However, we then put Vadim back in his line with Kirill Marchenko and Andrei Chibisov.

- Russia dominated in terms of faceoffs after the opening two periods.

- Different players competed as the centre forwards today. Both Sergei Fyodorov and I had played in the middle during our playing careers, we're explaining the small details to our players. We had six players in the squad for this game who are strong at faceoffs. Faceoffs are key: if you win a draw in your own zone, you can control the puck, and if you win one in the attacking zone, you can create a scoring opportunity.

- Are Vyacheslav Voynov and Nikita Gusev in contention to participate at the 2022 Olympic Games?

- All players have the possibility to be picked. The strongest players will be in the Olympic squad.

Senior Russian national team goalkeeper Ivan Fedotov:

- It's a short tournament, anything can happen. The coaches told me to be prepared to play.

- Was it more difficult against the Canadians or the Swedes?

- We started well against Canada. Today, however, Sweden were very tight defensively, and they controlled the puck really well. It was an emotional game with the Canadians, whereas this match was more disciplined.

- Do you think that you will play again at this competition?

- Let's see, I'm sure that the coaches have a plan.

- Assistant coach Sergei Fyodorov is your boss with CSKA Moscow. Does this make things easier for you?

- In modern ice hockey, all coaches want their goaltenders to be strong with the puck and communicate well with the defensemen. My job is to help the team, both at club and international level.
