The junior Russian national team will compete against Germany in the quarter-finals of the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship in Edmonton, Canada.
In the group stages, Russia claimed second place of Group B, defeating the USA (5:3), Sweden (4:3 OT) and Austria (7:1) while losing to the Czech Republic (0:2) to tally eight points.
Germany, for their part, recovered from two initial setbacks to Finland (3:5) and Canada (2:16) to beat Slovakia (4:3 OT) and Switzerland (5:4) to clinch a berth in the knockout phase of the competition for the first time in their history.
"We need to display our brand of ice hockey, " revealed Russian forward Yegor Afanasyev. "Yes, Germany lost to Canada by a large score, but they will be highly motivated tomorrow. There aren't any easy games at the World Championship."
