A memorial to Nikolai Khomutinnikov, who was a legendary USSR referee during his glittering career since starting out in 1961, has been unveiled in the Khamovniki district of Moscow.
Nikolai sadly passed away in 2017 at the age of 89. For 11 years, between 1962 and 1973, he was regarded as one of the top 10 referees in the country.
The memorial has been erected opposite the house in which Nikolai lived.
"The decision to create this memorial was taken with the residents of this area," stated Sergei Khomutinnikov, one of Nikolai's sons. "The most important thing for us as his children was that he introduced us to sport. Ice hockey is a way of life for our family! We're very happy that our father is being remembered in the right way."
