Vladislav Tretiak: "Russia U18 earned a very important victory"

The president of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation, Vladislav Tretiak, spoke about the importance of the under 18 national team winning the Hlinka/Gretzky Tournament:

Dear friends!

We are all waiting for the 2019/2020 season to begin. As usual, the Russian Ice Hockey Federation is preparing ahead of time for crucial tournaments in accordance with the schedule.

You can say that the under 18 Russian national team achieved an historic triumph this summer. It's great that the team won the Hlinka/Gretzky Tournament, with almost 25 years having passed since we last brought home the gold medal fr om the competition.

The competition is often regarded as the unofficial World Championship, with the strongest players of the respective age group gathering and playing against each other. Alongside the victory, it was also pleasing to see that Russia played a team game which clearly displayed the mutual understanding between the coaches and the players. It's vital for us that our young players are successful, because our future depends on them.

I am confident that the RIHF is on the right path in terms of working with young players. The government of the Russian Federation often plays a lot of attention to the development of youth ice hockey in our country. At the start of August, Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the Red Machine National Development seminar at the Sirius Educational Centre in Sochi, wh ere he became familiar with the main concepts and wished the RIHF future success. The RIHF really does appreciate his wonderful support for our sport.

The Russian Olympic team gained important experience at the 2019 Sochi Hockey Open in August. This year, there was an average age of 21 among the players, the lowest since the Olympic team was formed. Players who have recently been playing for the youth national teams played on an even footing with KHL players.

The new ice hockey season promises to be exciting and very interesting. A lot of our work will be associated with the 2022 Olympic Games in China. Also, our country is preparing to host the 2023 World Junior Championship in Novosibirsk and the 2023 senior World Championship in Saint Petersburg.

We want great performances and victories from our teams. All together, we can develop our sport, popularise it and take the right steps forward.
