World Girls’ ice hockey weekend
A training for girls was held today in HC “Grad” in Moscow within the framework of 2013 World Girls' Ice Hockey Weekend. It gathered more than 25 participants of all ages and was led by the 1996 Ice Hockey Europe Championship silver medalist and the 2001 Ice Hockey World Championship bronze medalist Zhanna Schelchkova.
Training was attended by girls with different level of physical preparation, that’s why after working on basic elements such as skating, stickhandling, deking and goal shots, they were divided into three groups and after that started exercising with different intensity level.
Zhanna Schelchkova: “It’s the second time I have participated in events of such kind and, in my opinion, they are really important. We tried to include as much as possible basic elements, close to hockey, in training process and in choosing them we tried to bear in mind girls’ age and their game level: many of them had never held stick in their hands before.
We need to show people that our kind of sport has lots of advantages. It disciplines, gives a lot of pleasure, develops basic qualities - coordination, flexibility, endurance - that can be very useful in life. It is nice that more and more people are getting to know about women’s hockey. In many respects it happens due to the fact that it’s being written and spoken about more.
Girl’s hockey weekend are held annually all over the world under the auspices of International Ice Hockey Federation. All activities organized within the frameworks of this celebration allow thousands of girls and young women to get acquainted with hockey and learn basic technical elements.
