Five Dmitry Orlov facts
Washington Capitals representative Dmitry Orlov made himself known to Russian ice hockey fans at the 2016 World Championship, and he is now training in preparation for the World Cup of Hockey. It's time to get up close and personal with the defenseman.
"I'm not Roman Lyubimov"
During the World Championship, Dmitry was called over for an interview. That's nothing new, but he was left in shock when the television correspondent reffered to him as Roman Lyubimov, his Russian teammate. Dmitry wasn't too impressed, however afterwards, he wasn't too harsh on the journalist, stating that anything can happen live.
Doesn't mind fights
While competing in the AHL, Dmitry came across true ice hockey fights, and he noted that while he isn't against dropping the gloves, only the tough guys should stick to the fighting. Nevertheless, he can play physical too, and he landed this amazing hit at the World Championship against Switzerland:
Became a car cleaner in Novokuznetsk
In the off-season, Dmitry took part in a special Novokuznetsk children's ice hockey charity along with Sergei Bobrovsky and Ilya Sorokin, and all three turned their hand to car washing. Lucky drivers stopped by to have their vehicles wiped down by the ice hockey stars, and after his first shift had finished, Dmitry added that he likes the way his hometown is progressing, and wants ice hockey to stay an integral part of the city.
Has real patience
At the 2014 World Championship in Minsk, Dmitry was struck down by a serious injury, and it took almost a year for him to be able to rejoin the action. At first, the doctors constantly put back his return date, and the defenseman admitted that he was finding it a rather frustrating time. However, he came through the process a stronger player, and is now one of the Washington Capitals' key players at the back.
Scored a strange goal
Dmitry certainly listened to his coach when he was told about keeping playing until the whistle blows. In the NHL against the Colorado Avalance, he took up his own rebound, the goalkeeper thought that he had frozen the puck, however Dmitry sped around the net and calmly wristed into the gaping left corner. You don't see such goals often!
