Elections for the new leadership of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) took place at the organisation's semi-annual congress.

Franz Reindl of Germany was elected IIHF President, becoming the 15th leader in the federation's history.

Two rounds of voting were required to determine the winner. In the first round Petr Bříza received 48 votes, Reindl 36 and Aivaz Omorkanov 33. As no candidate secured more than half of the votes, only Reindl and Bříza advanced to the second round.

Reindl then subsequently received 60 votes and Bříza 57 in the decisive round of voting.

For his part, Bříza was re-elected as Senior Vice President of the IIHF.

The Russian Ice Hockey Federation (RIHF) congratulates Franz Reindl on his election as President of the IIHF.

RIHF President Vladislav Tretiak:

"Franz Reindl is a man who boasts vast hockey experience. He has enjoyed plenty of success, notably winning a bronze medal at the Olympic Games with his national team, leading the German Ice Hockey Federation and serving on the IIHF Council for 10 years. I congratulate Franz with his election victory, wishing him plenty of success in his new role. We look forward to engaging in productive cooperation, and hope that Reindl and his management team will treat all hockey nations objectively and impartially."
