2018 World Championship. Russia - Canada - 4:5 OT

17.05.2018
In the 2018 World Championship quarter-final, the senior Russian national team took on Canada and lost 4:5 in overtime.

Russia started slowly in the opening frame, going behind early shorthanded when Colton Parayko hammered a strong one timer beyond the stranded Igor Shestyorkin. In control of proceedings, the Canadians played at a high tempo and put plenty of pressure on the Russians, outshooting our team 14-2 in the first period. Igor Shestyorkin was a busy man in net, pulling off a number of tough saves to keep our players in the game.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins made it two for the Canadians from the left faceoff circle on another powerplay, but all of a sudden, the game turned on its head. Moments later, Ilya Mikheev scored on the doorstep when Darcy Kuemper was out of position, before Alexander Barabanov squeezed a lot effort under the goalkeeper to level the game and give Russia a reward for some heavy pressure. 2:2 after 40 minutes.

The excitement continued in the third period, as Russia refused to let Canada build up a large advantage. Sergei Andronov tipped in to equalise after Kyle Turris beat Igor Shestyorkin with a slap shot, tying the game up with ten to play. Luc-Pierre Dubois smashed a juicy rebound in, but with time ticking down, Artyom Anisimov took the match to overtime with a stunning backhand effort.

Unfortunately, on the powerplay, Ryan O'Reilly deflected Connor McDavid's pass in to send Canada to the semi-finals 5:4.
