02.03.2026
Vladislav Tretiak, the President of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation (RIHF), paid a visit to the Republic of Buryatia, where he discussed the development of ice hockey in the region with its head, Alexei Tsydenov.
Furthermore, Tretiak was also the guest of honour at the Baikal Cup, which took place on the country's largest lake. The legendary Soviet goalkeeper spoke with the tournament participants, offering them career advice and giving them autographs.

RIHF President Vladislav Tretiak:
"It's fantastic that so many regions of our nation are eager to development of our sport. Buryatia is home to wonderful, hospitable and hardworking people, who are true patriots and always ready to defend our country's honour. The region's residents are distinguished by their courage, unwavering character and tenacity in achieving their goals. These qualities enable them to achieve success everywhere, including on the ice.

"Our meeting with Alexei was very productive. Conditions for ice hockey development are being created in Buryatia, namely the new Baikal Arena which was recently opened in Ulan-Ude. Enthusiasm and a desire to move forward are evident. Strengthening any sporting system begins with mass participation, with the creation of a system of youth academies and teams. Children in the republic enjoy playing ice hockey, and this offers promising prospects for progress. The RIHF boasts significant experience in training young players and improving the skills of coaches. We are ready to provide comprehensive support for the development of Buryat ice hockey and share our methods concerning the training process of young players. Growing local interest is always beneficial for our sport.

"This is already the 10th edition of the Baikal Cup, and it serves as an ideal example of just how popular amateur ice hockey is in Buryatia. Different generations are involved in physical exercise, strengthening their health, spirit and character. Attending such events is always inspiring. They truly demonstrate how our sport unites all citizens of the country—players and fans, professionals and amateurs. And the tradition of holding competitions on the ice of Lake Baikal is something to truly appreciate."
