In Moscow, veterans of the 1972 Super Series attended the opening match of the 2022/2023 KHL season between CSKA and Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

The 50th anniversary of the Super Series is being celebrated this year.

National team captain Boris Mikhailov, defensemen Vladimir Lutchenko and Yuri Lapkin and forwards Alexander Yakushev and Alexander Volchkov were present at the game, receiving commemorative USSR jerseys with the number 72 on the back and sitting in one of the CSKA Arena's VIP boxes.

Before the match started, a video dedicated to the 1972 Super Series was shown to the fans in attendance, with Russian Ice Hockey Federation president and legendary Soviet goalkeeper Vladislav Tretiak giving a speech.

"I welcome all of the veterans to this game today, they are true heroes who initiated a revolution in ice hockey in our country," stated Tretiak. "Everyone thought that ice hockey only existed in North America, but we showed that we can also play the game in Europe. One of the strongest teams in the world was the USSR!"
