03.02.2021
The Russian Minister of Science and Higher Education, Valeri Falkov, met with the first vice-president of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation, Roman Rotenberg, with regard to the development of youth sport and measures to support the Student Hockey League.
Valeri Falkov noted that the Student Hockey League currently includes 2,600 students from 86 Russian universities.
Over the course of the last few years, a set of measures has been implemented aimed at the development of student ice hockey, with All-Russian, international tournaments, gala matches and conferences being held. Work in this area is of an interdepartmental nature. The key partners are the Ministry of Sport, the Ministry of Scienc and Higher Education, the Russian Student Sports Union, the Russian Ice Hockey Federation and the Association of Russian Student Sportin Clubs.
Work concerning the involvement of young people in sport is being carried out. Since 2018, the program “Learn. Play. Become the Best!” has been in operation, a system which allows young ice hockey players planning to enter universities to continue their career in student ice hockey. Since the launch of the program, more than 1000 applicants have completed the online application on the league's website.
“A large number of young Russian students are part of the Student Hockey League," noted Valeri Falkov. "The Ministry of Science and Higher Education is actively working on the development of student sports, including ice hockey, with the emphasis on providing infrastructure in universities and projects on the availability of sports for young people in the regions. It is important that everyone who engages in sport at university feels comfortable. Sport, science and higher education are inconceivable without each other, they shape character and allow people to display their best qualities. There is a special attitude towards ice hockey in our country, it is our national pride. In the year of the 75th anniversary of ice hockey in Russia, we will continue to work on the development of sporting university clubs and support the Student Hockey League."
“The development of student ice hockey is a very important matter," said Roman Rotenberg. "Our task is to have an ice hockey rink in every university and an organised schedule, so that students do not have to choose between sport and their studies. People should develop harmoniously by studying well and being involved in sport. We have additional programs aimed at combining sport and education. We've been working on them for several years already, and we are consulting with the Ministry of Sport and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education."
