The U17 national team have beaten their U16 compatriots
With both the under 17 and under 16 national team preparing for separate tournaments, a friendly natch was organised between the two teams at the Novogorsk training base. Russian junior national team head coach Valery Bragin was in attendance.
Despite this being a training game both teams played hard against each other, and a mass total of 44 penalty minutes being racked up. It was level affair in the opening period, and Alexei Lipanov and Vladislav Kotov both netted on the powerplay.
If there was little to separate the teams in the first, the older U17 team pulled away in the second frame. Arseni Zherebtsov and Oleg Kholodenin both scored, and took a 3:1 scoreline into the third period.
It looked to be plain sailing for the U17's, however the U16's had a trick or two up their sleeve. Anton Malyshev made it a one goal game, and then with three minutes remaining Alexander Khovanov took the game to a shootout.
Nevertheless the U17 proved to be stronger there, as Nikita Rtishev became the hero.
