The first special ice hockey match was held in Moscow
29.12.2020
In Moscow, the first inclusive ice hockey match took place, with players with mental disabilities - those with down syndrome or autistic spectrum disorders - participating in the game.
The teams, consisting of different age groups, were made up those with special needs and other people from Moscow clubs who are just as passionate about ice hockey. The score wasn't kept and players were punished for fouls.
The first special ice hockey team appeared in Russia last year. Previously, the development of special ice hockey was only witnessed in the USA. Following a year of hard training, the guys have now mastered the rules and can play as a team together with experienced players. The Yeti Special Ice Hockey Team from Moscow has quashed the idea that those with special needs do not have the capability of participating in sport.
"In the past, I was always told that it's not possible for those with mental conditions to progress in sport, but that is completely false," stated Oksana Chistyakova, the coach of Russia's first special ice hockey team. "Yes, more time is required, but it really is worth the effort."
All players wished each other a Happy New Year and presented gifts to one another.
