Reaction following the conclusion of the 2018 Karjala Cup
11.11.2018
Following the conclusion of the 2018 Karjala Cup in Finland, Roman Rotenberg, Ilya Vorobyov, Alexei Vasilevskiy and Ilya Mikheev all shared their emotions.
Leader of the Russian national team management group and RIHF first vice-president Roman Rotenberg:
- Overall, we have positive feelings after winning two matches in confident fashion. The team completely stuck to the coach's game plan and played modern ice hockey. However, in the third match, mistakes were made and there is food for thought. The next tournament will soon start and we are working towards the 2019 IIHF World Championship in Slovakia. All of the players played for each other, especially in the opening two games, so I don't want to single anyone out. Our scouting and analytical departments are monitoring all of our players, we only call up the strongest to the national team, but it's too early to speak about the squad for the Channel One Cup. Our system is set up to allow all of our nine national teams to win. This week, the under 17 side and the Olympic team won their respective competitions. In December, we will play an outdoor match, and we've long wanted to play at a football stadium. We're lucky in Saint Petersburg with one of the world's most modern stadiums. The roof allows for the game to go ahead whatever the weather. It took a long time to plan. The last time when an ice hockey match took place at a football arena was in 1957 when the USSR hosted Sweden at the Luzhniki. It's time for another game.
Russian national team head coach Ilya Vorobyov:
- The Czechs played their style of game on the counterattacks. For our part, we committed sloppy errors. One goal was lacking to tie the game. In this tournament, we saw more positive things than negative, we won the Karjala Cup and looked at new, young players in the team. We know that the Olympic team won their competition in Germany, maybe we will call up some of those players for the next tournament.
Russian national team defenseman Alexei Vasilevskiy:
- All of the guys did a great job here, we won the competition. It was my debut for the senior national team, and when I scored today, I couldn't believe it at first. Thank you to my teammates for giving me a fantastic assist. We were a bit unlucky in taking advantage of our goalscoring opportunities.
Russian national team forward Ilya Mikheev:
- I feel good, thank you to the doctors for helping me recover. Why did we lose to the Czech Republic? We lost a lot of the duels.
