In the opening match of the Czech Hockey Games, the senior Russian national team dropped a 1:2 defeat against Sweden.

Interim head coach Ilya Vorobyov picked a strong line-up for the battle with the Swedes at Yaroslavl's Arena-2000, including the likes of Evgeny Dadonov, Pavel Buchnevich, Anton Slepyshev and Nikita Gusev. Igor Shestyorkin was the starting goaltender.

The Swedes came flying out of the blocks in the first period, creating a number of chances and putting pressure on the Russians. Unfortunately, it resulted in a goal, as Patrick Zackrisson beat Igor Shestyorkin on the powerplay.

Nevertheless, Russia answered with a positive response in the second, equalising through team captain Evgeny Dadonov with the man's advantage. It went down to the wire in the third frame, where Fredrik Handemark netted the winner.
